So what options do I have?

First of all look at the fitting on the lamp you wish to replace and establish what type they are – you can then click on the relevent image below to view all choices available to you.

Once you know your options, consider how you use a room and what kind of atmosphere you want to create – if you prefer warm and cosy then look for lamps with a colour temperature in the 2700k range whilst if the prefer the bright, contemporary feels then look for the higher colour temperature lamps (4000+k). Don’t forget you can create interesting effects by mixing the lamps – maybe you would prefer a good reading or working light so why not try a higher temperature lamp on a desk or in a spotlight?  Click here to see some photos of how much difference colour temperature makes to a room.

If it’s somewhere where you like to sit and read then clearly you need a good level of light so don’t be tempted to try and make do with a lower wattage – go higher rather than lower.

Finally you have to consider size. Unfortunately, energy saving lamps tend to be larger than traditional lamps, particularly the candle style lamps.

If your fitting is open and you can see the bulb then it’s probably better to go for the candle style as they look better, but if the bulb is in a shade or hidden then look at the mini spiral style as they are smaller and give off more light per watt.
