What are lumens?
Lumens is a measure of the amount of light generated by a light source. It is a total figure so if light is generated from a globe it include the light that hits the ceiling as well as the useful light which hits the floor. This is where lumens figures should be treated with care - you could have two lamps one with a higher lumens figure than the other, but because of the way the lamps are deisgned the amount of useful light generated by the apparantly more powerful lamp could be less than another seemingly less powerful light. You should always look at the lumens figure in conjunction with the beam angle - if you have two lamps with the same beam angle then the lumens figure will indicate which is brighter. You might also see LUX figures quoted - this is in many ways a better figure to consider as it is a measure of how much light falls on an area a given distance from a light source.
