The basic choice is between Compact Flourescent (CFL) which offer long life, low running costs BUT tend to be larger, have some disposal issues, verses LED which offer even longer life, lower power consumption, small, immediate start, yet are more expensive, and tend to offer higher colour temperatures with more focussed beams.

Sizing

CFL lamps do tend to be a bit larger than standard incandescent lamps so make sure you measure your fittings to check that they will fit OK before you buy.
