Downlighters and Fittings

Unfortunately not all fittings can take a low energy lamp so to help you where a low energy lamp CAN be used we will tell you. Equally if some lamps are incompatible with particular fittings then we will advise you in advance.

The low energy fittings we have all come complete with lamps and are designed without compromise - no lightbulbs sticking out of the top!

SO WHY PAY MORE FOR A FIREPROOF FITTING? -

Barely a couple of years ago,it was common practice to install recessed downlighters in ceilings with no form of fire protection cover.

All recognised that cutting a hole in a fire-rated ceiling presented a potentially serious safety hazard. The fire rating of the ceiling was severely compromised by the hole. Flames and smoke would naturally find ingress in the gaps between the downlight and the ceiling, escaping up into the ceiling void and to the floor above far faster. The ceiling could not then perform to its given safety standard.

By compromising a ceiling’s safety standards, in the event of a fire, serious issues of civil and even criminal liability could be raised. Specifiers, installers, managers and owners might all find themselves culpable if it was shown that they had ignored the standards mentioned above.

A standard downlighter is clearly not going to burn as it's made of metal BUT it's not a fully sealed unit meaning that in the event of fire it is possible to flames to pass into the roof void space above the lamp and for it to spread throughout the building. The fire rated fittings are designed so that if a fire breaks out the heat generated causes a special material in the fitting to expand and completely seal the fitting so preventing the fire spreading for up to 90 minutes - it could save your home or more importantly your life.
